Perdita Keene, the unwanted daughter of a brutal British World War I veteran and his cold elitist wife, narrates the story of her dysfunctional family`s life in the Australian outback. Against this alien backdrop, Perdita finds friendship from an aborigine orphan, Mary, who is taken into the household act as a nanny after Stella falls ill. The novel turns towards tragedy when Perdita`s father forces himself sexually on Mary, an act that infuses Perdita with a long-lasting sense of guilt, shame, and outrage.
